Cognitive and metacognitive therapy

Finding a psychologist can be a bit of a jungle.

Secondly, it can be difficult to keep track of the many therapeutic methods.

Some methods dig into your developmental history for clarity and peace of mind.

Other methods focus primarily on the present.

Cognitive and metacognitive therapy are some of the therapy methods that focus on the present.

If your problem is anxiety, stress or depression, I use elements of cognitive therapy, but my primary method is metacognitive therapy.

In metacognitive therapy, you learn how to avoid fighting a futile battle with anxiety. The point is that this struggle tends to perpetuate and worsen anxiety.

If you suffer from depression to a greater or lesser degree or are stuck in worry, I will teach you what you can do to avoid falling into worry and rumination holes.

As you learn new ways to manage thoughts and emotions, and bodily symptoms, you’ll experience how to calm your mind and free yourself from stress, anxiety and depression.

 Grief and crisis therapy

If you have lost a loved one or are in crisis due to major life changes such as critical illness or loss, I can help you avoid being thrown off course.

In the acute and later stages of a crisis, it can be very important to go through the experience in a safe space.

Difficult emotions and thoughts come and go. Reactions and difficult emotions such as anger and sadness need to be normalized, and you may need specific crisis psychology advice on how to handle them.

In the case of very violent and traumatic incidents, tools for coping are especially important.

In these cases, I use my crisis psychology knowledge to prevent trauma from developing into post-traumatic stress syndrome.

What is cognitive therapy?

Cognitive therapy is a therapeutic method based on the understanding that our thoughts and feelings controls our behavior. Negative thoughts activate unpleasant emotions like fear and sadness, causing us to avoid situations or get stuck in a negative thought spiral.

Cognitive therapy teaches you not to let negative thoughts control your behavior because they are often not realistic, even if your emotions tell you they are.

Cognitive therapy helps you understand this so that you treat thoughts as just thoughts and not as facts. In Cognitive Therapy, negative thoughts, feelings and reactions are identified and described.

Then the negative thoughts will be challenged so that your thoughts about yourself, others and life become more nuanced and realistic. This will give you more courage to face life and avoid getting stuck in negative thought spirals that limit your life expression.

Cognitive therapy can in some cases be particularly effective in conjunction with metacognitive therapy, as metacognitive therapy works with mental techniques that can make it easier to break out of negative thought spirals. Because even if you understand that the thoughts are not realistic, you can Breaking out of negative thinking can be difficult because it has become habitual and feels out of your control.
