What is metacognitive therapy?

In short, metacognitive therapy is a method that focuses on the present, and on the interaction between thoughts, feelings and behavior.

Metacognitive therapy will show you how you can gain control over your thinking. and avoid getting stuck in exhausting worries and ruminations.

The metacognitive method is based on the assumption that it is not our thoughts and feelings that cause mental illness.

On the other hand, the cause of mental illness is, first of all, our relationship with our thoughts. That is, we attach too much value to our negative thoughts. So if we get negative thoughts about ourselves, we treat them as facts instead of thinking that they are just thoughts.

Next, the metacognitive method is based on the understanding that it is our handling of our thoughts and feelings that affects our mental health and can lead to anxiety disorders and depression.

For example, negative thoughts and sadness can make us ruminate. Many people believe that this can help us feel more calm, clear-headed, and less sad.

But rumination only makes us sadder and creates more negative thoughts.

In metacognitive therapy, the goal is therefore to identify and change the thought patterns and behavioral strategies that maintain and reinforce symptoms such as sadness, rumination, anxiety, and restlessness.

How I work with metacognitive and cognitive therapy

As a metacognitive psychologist, I will work with you to map the connection between your symptoms of psychological distress and your strategies, which are what you do or think to feel better.

If you experience problems with stress, anxiety or depression, we will work together to understand how your thoughts and coping strategies contribute to your symptoms.

You will then learn how to tackle difficult thoughts and feelings more appropriately, including achieving a more relaxed view of thoughts and feelings.

Through this, you will be able to break the patterns that maintain and reinforce anxiety, stress and depression.

When you experience how you feel better, so to speak, by being able to control your thinking and change your strategies, you will achieve a whole new sense of control and freedom.
